This project is a repurposing (adaptive re-use) of the City of Palm Desert Visitors Center (the first LEED-certified building in the Coachella Valley, constructed in 2005) into a branch of the Palm Springs Art Museum.
Program requirement: Upgrade the existing HVAC system to provide 24/7 environmental conditions for the Museum's art exhibits and collections. The existing 100% outside air system consisted of a York chilled water air handler with an indirect evaporative cooler, a York air-cooled chiller, and a variable air volume (VAV) air distribution with hot water reheat from a combined space heating and domestic water system. The upgraded system includes an airside economizer, replacement cooling coil, larger supply fan motor and drive, Neptronic gas-fired outdoor steam humidifier, and a new Carrier control system. The upgraded system maintains a constant indoor temperature and humidity throughout the year in a low desert climate which varies from cool and very dry winters to extremely hot and humid periods during the monsoon season.
Services performed: Mechanical and plumbing engineering and drawings for City of Palm Springs plan review and competitive bidding. Title 24 Energy Calculations.
Architect (Original and Remodel): Interactive Design Corporation.
